SEE Life, Sea SKN

A national marine environment based awareness campaign to conserve biodiversity in St.Kitts and Nevis

The primary problem identified is the lack of national level awareness programs geared towards educating persons in St.Kitts about conserving biodiversity within the marine and terrestrial spheres. Locally, persons have been led to believe that they should fear the ocean and shy away from lucrative marine-based recreational activities. However, this national awareness campaign will be focused on creating a change in the attitude and perspective of persons toward the sea. This campaign will seek to foster a greater appreciation for the marine life and encourage underwater adventures by exploring the ocean. #divein

Sea what we’re up to!

The MAC

The Marine Awareness Consortium (MAC) operates as a technical based inter agency grouping between Government and Non-Government agencies that will be educating schools and other institutions about the marine environment using a ridge to reef approach as a first step to encourage nationals to #divein.

BROADCAST

Develop a website and launch social media campaigns to create a strong digital presence to broadcast the messaging about the marine environment.

Sea DANCE

Choreograph and perform special dance routines that focus on St. Kitts  and Nevis Marine Management Areas using key themes of seascape conservation for school visits and major cultural events on St. Kitts and Nevis (eg. National Carnival, Green Valley Festival, Independence Celebration, Culturama, Black San’ Bang-a-lang, grass root concerts and other productions.)

Large scale murals vividly portraying different aspects of marine life will be placed in strategic locations across the island. Including traditional and non traditional fishing communities.  A special feature will be a marine career themed mural to be placed within a school in a non – traditional fishing community.

SEA LIFE Books

Media and creative works highlight Pacific Ocean based marine species NOT those found in the Atlantic Ocean or Caribbean Sea. Therefore, See Life Sea SKN will create an illustrative children’s marine awareness book using species that can be found within the proposed SKN Marine Management Area. Key themes of the book series will be based on real-life threats to the seascape (eg Lionfish invasion, Pollution and Unregulated fishing) while emphasizing the need for conservation of endangered and vulnerable marine creatures.
